New Moon in Aquarius

This Saturday the 21st we have the new moon in Aquarius. It is also Imbolc - the moment inbetween the solstice and the equinox. And, the 22nd is the lunar new year! A perfect combination setting the foundation for magic. This energy supports intention setting. It is time to look back on the intentions we set at the end of December and see how they are unfolding and how they feel for us now. And, it is the time to set our intentions going forward. Maybe the last few weeks have solidified our intentions, or maybe they have allowed us to see where we need to redirect and rewrite our intentions. Either way, this is the time to breathe life into your dreams.

Aquarius energy is always thinking about community and yet is very independent and not afraid to go off on its own. The energy of Aquarius is the epitomy of belonging versus fitting in. It is about creating a community that truly feels like home, and one in which you can also be completely and totally your unique unfiltered self. A community where you do not need to conform or contort yourself to be accepted. Aquarius is about forging your own path, being creative, revolutionary, seeing things from a different perspective. It is also an air sign. Those with this energy are very intellectual, always thinking, creating, processing. They tend to not pay as much attention to their emotions and because of this, an Aquarius moon can feel a little challenging. It is important on this new moon to connect your head and your heart. Don’t let the energy of Aquarius drag you into thinking and doing mode, check in with yourself and make sure to find your balance.

My intention for this new moon is to focus on connection that feels fully in alignment for me, regardless of what that looks like, and to clear out the rest, no matter what.

Below are this month’s suggestions for journal prompts, plants and mindfulness practices. These suggestions can be done on their own or all together as a ritual; perhaps grab some tea, your journal and set up a time to call a friend this Saturday.

Journal Prompts:

  • What does community mean to me? What does independence mean to me?

  • How do I want to impact the world? How do I connect with the world right now?

  • When does community and connection feel safe and supportive for me? Do I have this kind of community in my life right now? How do my commitments and boundaries feel? Are there any that need to be altered, updated, or put to rest?

  • What in my life needs a new perspective, reinventing, revolutionizing?

Plants to work with :

  • Lavender - this is such a complimentary plant for Aquraius season because it helps us channel our creativity while also calming our mind and helping with overthinking. It is also very versatile in use and can be found easily in candles, essential oils, and teas.

  • Cinnamon - another herb that is easy to find and work into your day. Cinnamon helps protect you from others’ energy and supports you in staying in alignment with your own energy and intuition. It also promotes confidence and improves mental clarity and functioning.

  • Sage - this plant brings about clarity, grounding, protection and connection - to yourself and others.

  • Ginger - if you’re feeling really connected and aligned with the energy of the new moon, ginger may be a supportive plant for you to work with. It can help you connect deeper to your energy, fire and creativity. However, if you’re feeling slightly unsettled or scattered, it can be too destabilising for you.

  • Chamomile - if you are feeling slightly overwhelmed, chamomile is a calming and grounding plant that can help clear your mind and connect you to your centre while still helping you stay creative and present. Mixing ginger and chamomile together could help you find your balance.

Yoga / Mindfulness Practices:

  • Stream of Consciousness Journaling - this is a great way to connect your head and your heart - let all of your thoughts and ideas flow as Aquarius energy wants you to, no holding back or filtering. Try not to pause or even lift your pen from the page because that leaves too much space for your brain to take hold. Let the words flow and see what comes up.

  • Active Listening: This is similar to the journaling practice but also connects you with another person. Call up someone you love and trust, ask them if it is ok if you speak what’s on your mind for a couple of minutes without any response from them. Then, let your thoughts flow without holding yourself back. Communicate with them what you would like after you are done - whether you would like advice, comments, or no response at all. Offer to hold the same space for them. This can also be done in the form of a voice note!

  • Guided meditation - I find this type of meditation supportive when my mind is extra active and I am having trouble quieting my thoughts. A guided meditation allows you to focus your attention on someone else’s voice and let’s them take the reigns. It gives less space for your thoughts to control the situation and may provide a new perspective and energy shift.
