I Don’t Know

A mantra I’ve been embracing lately is “I don’t know.”

The power of this mantra lies not only in the words, but in the energy and the intention behind the words. The way the words are spoken and the meaning behind them.

I’m not saying “I don’t know” with any guilt or shame. I’m not saying “I don’t know” apologetically or as an excuse.

It’s “I don’t know” proclaimed with excitement.

I don’t know and how exciting is that? I don’t know what the future holds, I don’t know the answer, and that leaves the door open for so many surprises and possibilities. There are so many outcomes that are possible with this I don’t know and I am accepting of them all. I am allowing the universe to show me how magical life can be.

It’s “I don’t know” stated with relief.

I don’t know and that means I don’t have to know. That means I can let go of needing to have everything figured out, having everything under control at all times. That means I don’t have to be perfect, I don’t have to pretend, I don’t have to try so hard.

Because, the truth is, we don’t know. Even if we pretend to know, even if we try to know, even if we think we know. We don’t. We don’t know what the future holds, we don’t know how it all is going to turn out, we don’t know what is going to happen next.

We can only control what we can control. And, for better or worse, that is very little.

Although repeating this mantra has become easier with time, my desire to predict, control, and know the unknown still can take over.

Here are three ways I have been helping myself embrace the fear of the unknown more —-

St. Johns Wort - this is one of the most powerful herbs for anxiety and stress support. In order to best embrace the fear, anxiety and even panic that can come up around the unknown, we must support our nervous system regulation. Without a regulated nervous system, it is all too easy to get caught up in the stress cycle again and again. Your system is already on fight, flight, freeze or fawn mode, and you are never given chance to ground and find your centre. Utilising herbs like St. Johns Wort in a tea, tincture, or other form of medicine, gives your nervous system a chance to regulate and stay regulated throughout all the ups and downs.

Elongated Exhales - extending your exhales longer than your inhales also calms your nervous system and helps you ground into the present moment. Whenever I feel my anxiety kicking up, I take a moment to inhale for a count of two, and exhale for a count of four. You can use whatever count you’d like but doubling the length of your exhale verse inhale is the focus. You can also repeat the mantra “I don’t know” as you are exhaling.

Turning to your Authority - one of the most powerful pieces of Human Design is your Authority. Your Authority is how your intuition speaks to you. Strengthening, trusting and turning to my Authority, has allowed me to find a sense of peace in the unknown. This is because my Authority is what allows me to know the right decision to make. By utilising my Authority, I trust myself to make the right decisions in the moment I am meant to. There are different types of Authorities, each one of us has our own way of communicating with our intuition. I talk a bit about each here.
